Minimum two years from first degree to second degree.
Minimum three years from second degree to third degree.
Minimum four years from third degree to fourth degree.
Minimum five years from fourth degree to fifth degree.
Minimum six years from fifth degree to sixth degree.
Of course the proviso is that the student has kept training continuously over these periods.
Sixth degree and on is all about honouring the long standing student.
As the student gets older the emphasis is more on knowledge, attitude and how they pass their knowledge on then physical training but continual involvement is still a must.
Minimum seven years from sixth degree grading.
Higher level grade titles.
All senior Black Belts should have a reasonable knowledge of senior grading structure.
Sensei – (Class Instructor) Minimum of 3rd Dan. Ability to teach practical methods and basic techniques. The Sensei grading is a technical demonstration of kata from Bukido including the “Bo/Jo” kata.
Renshi – (Dojo Instructor) Minimum rank 4th Dan. Ability to teach practical methods and basic techniques. Proven dedication to Budo through long term teaching experience. Renshi grading is by invitation based on ones input into the development of the Karate community.
Kyoshi – (Kyo=professor or philosophy Shi=person, professor) Minimum rank 6th Dan. Outstanding knowledge of the traditions and methods of Budo. Demonstrated excellence of technique and teaching methods.
Shidoshi – (Guiding principle) usually refers to head of style. a teacher that can serve as an ideal model for others. Individual of outstanding moral and personal character. Proven leadership
and exceptional contribution to Budo. Deep understanding of the techniques, history, and spirit of the martial arts. Quite often used in Ninjitsu.
Basic words and how to spell them is a must for all Senior and Intermediate Black Belts.
Don’t forget there is a full terminology section in the senior book. However a senior black belt should be familiar with the following words and their pronunciation.
Budo. Meaning martial arts ways.
Dachi. Stance.
Gi. Karate uniform. The word literally means “dress or clothes” Comes from the word “Dogi.”
Kancho. Literally means “head of the house.”
Kara. Meaning empty.
Kata. Pre-fixed karate movements.
Ki. Inner strength. Also known as “Chi”
Kumite. Sparring (at Bukido it is classed as non contact).
Obi. Belt.
Rei. Bow.
Renshi. Means 4th degree black belt (used up to 6th degree.)
Sempai. At bukido “Sempai” refers to one who has achieved Black Belt. In some styles, it means high graded helper.
Sensei. Literally means teacher. In Bukido Sensei means 3rd degree and above.
Shidoshi. Is the Japanese word used for “guiding principle.”
Suki. Punch
Te. means hand as in karaTE
Uchi. Means strike, for example, Shuto Uchi. Knifehand strike.
Uke. Block sometimes pronounced OOkey.
Yakusoku. In Bukido we say it as yaksuki. Means one, two or three step pre-fixed sparring.
