All rules and guidelines.

The basic rules in our club are based on tradition, common courtesy and respect. Beginners are not expected to know all the rules straight away but are expected to try and learn the basic ones by their first grading.

      General Rules

  • Uniforms should be kept clean and tidy.
  • Students should bring their own drink bottles to class.
  • No shoes are allowed on the training mat.
  • Students must always be courteous and helpful to each other.
  • Students must always address instructors by the correct title (ie. Sempai).
  • Students must show respect to instructors at all times. (Never talking when the instructor is talking) Failing to adhere to this could result in the student being asked to leave the mat for the rest of the class. If the student is asked to leave the mat more than once for talking while an instructor is talking, then that students will be held back from gradings until they can prove they understand and follow this rule.
  • If late, a student must wait at the edge of the mat until an instructor bows them in.
  • Students must never touch a black belt’s uniform (gi) or belt (obi) unless they have been granted permission.
  • Students must take care of all training equipment treating it as their own.
  • Students must never wash their belts or wear them outside the dojo.
  • No bad language is allowed in the dojo.
  • No food or chewing gum is allowed in the training area.
  • Harassment of fellow students of any kind will not be tolerated.
  • Any form of discrimination based on sex, ethnic origin, language, religious belief, or any other form of
    differentiation will not be tolerated.
  • Alcohol must not be consumed before class.
  • No smoking in or around the Dojo.

During Training

  • Students must be signed in at the desk before class.
  • Students must be on time and ready to step onto the mat when class starts.
  • Lining up for class facing the front, the higher grade students stand to the left,
if students are the same grade, the student that graded first or has trained with Bukido karate the longest is to the left (facing the front). Failing to adhere to this shows disrespect and student could lose the last grading or even go back to white belt depending on the instructor’s discretion.
  • If a student arrives late they must wait at the edge of the mat in seiza (kneeling position) until they are bowed in.
  • Students must acknowledge all instructions with ’aye’ meaning ’yes I understand’ or ‘osu’, pronounced ’ooos’.
  • Any special needs or injuries should be reported to the instructor before class.
  • If a student feels unwell or stressed during class they should tell the instructor straight away.
  • Students must not wear jewellery or watches when training.
  • Students should never walk through the middle of any class.
  • Students must always walk behind other students when entering or leaving the dojo and should never walk in front of a higher grade.
  • If a student must stop training or leave the class for any reason they must first ask the permission of the instructor.
  • Students including other instructors must never interrupt or correct a class instructor unless there is an emergency situation.
  • Students must not interrupt the training of fellow students.
  • The head instructor must be greeted first when entering or leaving class.
  • Students must turn off mobile phones during training unless specific permission has been granted by the instructor.
  • Never challenge or backchat to a higher grade as this is the height of disrespect.
  • When a student is asked to leave the mat, they must clarify with the instructor why then apologize to the instructor on completion of the class.
  • No phone calls in the mated area. (front reception is ok.)
  • Coming back after a break from training.

  • If a teen or adult student has not trained for three months or longer, the correct protocol is to ask the instructor what belt to wear (or actually get ready for training with a white belt.)
This is in line with our beliefs on “Humbleness.” If your original grade is restored, you will not start to progress to your next grade until an instructor confirms that you are at the grade (belt) you are wearing. This is to confirm your control, techniques and attitude.
  • Gradings

  • Students must always be at the gradings at least 15 minutes before it starts.
  • Only proper uniforms can be worn during gradings. (No T/Shirts during gradings.)(Unless special permission is given.)
  • Uniforms must be clean and tidy, with correct belts tied in the proper manner.
  • Students cannot attempt grading if they have not trained in the previous month before grading (safety, declined fitness and control.)
  • Grading prices are for attempted gradings, in other words, if the student fails the grading, there is no refund.
